Deidra began her study of Iyengar Yoga in 2012 after being introduced to the method during a vinyasa teacher training. The clarity, depth, and precision of that first Iyengar class made a lasting impact, sparking a deeper commitment to the practice. She enrolled in the teacher training program at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York in 2015 and became a Level 1 Certified teacher in 2017, followed by Level 2 Certification in 2019. Her primary teachers are James Murphy, Lara Warren, and Tori Milner. Deidra has volunteered with IYNAUS, contributing to outreach efforts that promote diversity and introduce young people to Iyengar Yoga.
Before dedicating herself to teaching yoga, Deidra studied acting at The Theatre School at DePaul University and moved to New York to pursue her dream of being a theatre artist. She continues to express her creativity through writing and visual storytelling. Her blog, Yoga Pearls, offers accessible yoga tips and practices for everyday life. She is also the creator of Black History & Yoga, a photo series honoring unsung heroes and cultural icons through art and yoga.
Deidra’s teaching style is dynamic, clear, and encouraging. She blends careful demonstration with thoughtful sequencing to help students build confidence and connection in their practice. Her teaching is grounded in the belief that yoga should be both empowering and accessible to all.
“Love is seeing someone for who they are, and for all the things they don’t know they can be.” These words reflect Deidra’s intention as a teacher: to guide with compassion, meet students where they are, and offer steady support as they grow.
